Progress of clinical research on avascular necrosis after austin osteotomy

Abstract: Austin osteotomy is a common procedure in the correction of hallux valgus.Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the first metatarsal head is one of the complications of Austin procedure for hallux valgus correction.Although an infrequent complication,it is widely reported that consequences for those who develop postoperative AVN may be severe.This paper presents overview of pathogenesis and classification of AVN.It reviews the vascular anatomy of the first metatarsal with reference to surgical technique of Austin osteotomy with lateral release.Imaging techniques are described and management of AVN and revision surgery are also discussed.
