Abstract: Objective To understand the relationship between circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and clinical pathologic stages in patients with colon cancer. Methods CTCs counts in peripheral blood of untreated patients with colon cancer were detected by CellSearch technique. The relationship between CTCs and clinical pathologic stages of colon cancer was analyzed. Results CTCs in peripheral blood were detected in 40.6% (13/32) untreated cases of colon cancer.Significant relationships of positive CTCs were identified with colon cancer infiltration, TNM stage, and blood vessel infiltration (P<0.05), but not with age, sex, tumor size, and nerve infiltration. The Ⅲ+Ⅳ TNM stage patients had a much higher positive rate of CTCs than the Ⅰ+Ⅱ TNM stage patients (P<0.05).Conclusion CTCs can be detected in the peripheral blood of colon cancer patients, indicating higher clinicopathological stages.
